Emergency responders arrived within minutes. Firefighters battled intense flames as thick black smoke rose, visible across the city. Residents screamed as rescue teams worked tirelessly to extinguish fires and search for survivors.

“We could hear people crying inside the debris,” said Meena Desai, a local resident helping firefighters. “They were calling for help, but the fire was too strong. It was unbearable.”

Dozens of ambulances, NDRF teams, and police units joined the response, while helicopters hovered overhead. Paramedics and volunteers pulled victims from the wreckage. Despite heroic efforts, all 242 people on board are presumed dead. Several residents on the ground were injured, though the full extent is still being assessed.

Air India Responds

Air India issued a statement:

“Flight AI171, operating the Ahmedabad–London Gatwick route, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and are working with authorities to ascertain full details. Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those affected.”

Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed the airline’s sorrow:

“With profound sorrow, I confirm that Air India Flight AI171 has been involved in a tragic accident. Our deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones. Our immediate focus is supporting rescue operations and providing every possible assistance.”

The airline has activated emergency response teams and is coordinating with Indian and British authorities. A hotline has been established for families seeking updates.

Investigation Underway

The DGCA and Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) launched a joint investigation. Early reports indicate a sudden technical problem, but all possibilities remain open.

“The black box and cockpit voice recorder are key,” said aviation expert Arvind Menon. “They will reveal whether it was mechanical failure, engine fire, or a systems malfunction.”

Though the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is considered among the safest aircraft, its complex electrical systems have faced scrutiny in past incidents.

Witness Accounts

Residents described terrifying scenes. Many initially thought an explosion was an earthquake or gas leak.

“The noise shook our windows,” said Irfan Khan, living under a kilometer from the site. “Debris was falling from the sky, and a part of the wing landed on the street.”

Videos on social media showed massive flames, smoke, and locals rushing to assist before emergency crews arrived.

“I saw a mother clutching her child’s toy, crying,” said a Red Cross volunteer. “It’s something I’ll never forget.”
