A Georgia community is grappling with the death of Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old maths teacher and coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville, after what authorities say was a late-night prom-season prank that ended in tragedy outside his home. Investigators say a group of teenagers arrived at Hughes’s house shortly before midnight on 6 March and began toilet-papering trees on the property, part of what local residents described as a long-running senior prank tradition. As the teenagers tried to leave in two vehicles, Hughes came outside, slipped into the road and was struck by a pickup truck driven by 18-year-old student Jayden Ryan Wallace, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and the Associated Press. Hughes was taken to hospital and later died.
