Fort McNair has long been bound up with the security architecture of the American state. The Army says the installation stands at the meeting point of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers and has served the capital since the earliest years of the republic. Over time it evolved from the old Washington Arsenal into a major institutional base inside the city, with a mix of historic quarters, military command functions and national security education. Against that backdrop, reports of unidentified drones above the post land as more than a curiosity. They point to a modern security problem unfolding over one of the oldest and most symbolically important military sites in the United States.
