A Georgia community is grappling with the death of Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old maths teacher and coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville, after what authorities say was a late-night prom-season prank that ended in tragedy outside his home. Investigators say a group of teenagers arrived at Hughes’s house shortly before midnight on 6 March and began toilet-papering trees on the property, part of what local residents described as a long-running senior prank tradition. As the teenagers tried to leave in two vehicles, Hughes came outside, slipped into the road and was struck by a pickup truck driven by 18-year-old student Jayden Ryan Wallace, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and the Associated Press. Hughes was taken to hospital and later died.

Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving, while four other 18-year-olds, identified in local reporting as Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque and Ariana Cruz, face misdemeanour charges including criminal trespass and littering on private property. Authorities said the teenagers stopped after Hughes was hit and tried to render aid before emergency crews arrived. The case has drawn intense attention in Hall County not only because of the fatal outcome but because Hughes was widely known in the area as both a teacher and mentor whose work extended far beyond the classroom. He taught maths at North Hall High School and also helped coach golf, football and baseball, according to AP and local reports.
