“No,” I said, shaking my head. “If you really knew, you wouldn’t talk about separating them like they’re objects.”

Her tone softened. “You’re only eighteen. You don’t have stable income. The house payments are behind—”

“I’ll figure it out,” I cut her off. “I’ll work. I’ll learn. Just… don’t split them up.”

She sighed. “Love isn’t always enough.”

“Then teach me what is,” I said. “But don’t take them away from each other.”

The court hearing was even worse.

Aunt Denise arrived looking completely confident, as if the outcome was already hers. Uncle Warren stood beside her, holding a folder like proof of victory.
