Something about that moment stayed with me. Maybe it was how the kids leaned forward ever so slightly, or how the woman avoided eye contact, as if she felt embarrassed about something beyond her control. I just knew it wasn’t enough.
I handed her the pizza, then without really thinking, I reached into my pocket and pulled out the only money I had left—twenty dollars. It was supposed to last me the rest of the week.
