“Mom left me,” I whispered through tears. “She went to Hawaii and said I was baggage.”

Everything in his voice changed instantly.

The confusion vanished, replaced by something focused, cold, and fiercely protective.

“Listen carefully, Leah,” he said firmly. “Stay exactly where you are with that social worker. Do not leave. I’m in Chicago right now for business, but I’m coming immediately.”

Mrs. Vega gently took the phone from my hands to discuss arrangements. As she listened, her eyes widened in surprise.

When she finally hung up, she looked at me differently.

“He’s chartering a private plane,” she said quietly. “He’ll be here within three hours.”

I hugged Barnaby tightly against my chest as the smallest spark of hope flickered inside the darkness.

But one terrifying thought still lingered in my mind:
