Chapter Two: The Name Hidden in the Shadows

The silence afterward felt unbearable.

I sat frozen in place, hugging Barnaby so tightly his seams nearly split apart. I didn’t scream. I didn’t run. I simply sat there in shock until the shadow of a security officer stretched across the floor near my shoes.

“Hey there, sweetheart,” a tall airport officer said carefully. “You’ve been sitting here a while. Where are your parents?”
