I kept glancing toward the entrance, waiting for Claire, but she never came. I called her several times, and every call went to voicemail.

My father said she was upset and would eventually calm down. My mother told me not to let Claire ruin my day. So I smiled for relatives, thanked guests for their presents, and pretended my stomach wasn’t twisting itself into knots.

An hour later, my mother’s phone rang.
