Daniel stood too quickly, wincing as he put weight on one leg.
“Mom, please,” he said. “You don’t understand.”
“No,” she snapped. “Apparently I don’t understand anything.”
The old woman in the bed coughed again, deeper this time, her frail body curling inward from the force of it. Daniel immediately grabbed the glass of water from the nightstand and helped her sit up.
Her son knew how to care for her.
