A catastrophic aviation disaster struck on Thursday afternoon when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed near Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff. Flight AI171, bound for London Gatwick from Ahmedabad, went down minutes after departure, leaving behind smoke, twisted wreckage, and unimaginable grief.

Authorities confirmed that the pilot issued a desperate Mayday call to Air Traffic Control moments before the crash, reporting a critical in-flight emergency. While the exact cause remains under investigation, early indications suggest a possible mechanical failure.

The Final Minutes

Flight AI171 departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at approximately 1:10 p.m. local time. Onboard were 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Just three minutes after takeoff, the captain radioed ATC with a Mayday, signaling a severe problem. Witnesses reported hearing engine sputters and seeing smoke trailing from a wing. Seconds later, the aircraft lost altitude, banked sharply, and disappeared from radar.

“It looked like it was struggling to gain height,” said Ramesh Patel, a resident near the crash zone. “Then there was a huge boom — the ground shook, and flames shot up like a wall.”

The plane went down near Ghoda Camp, between Meghaninagar and the Ahmedabad Cantonment area, a densely populated zone close to the airport. Homes and vehicles were damaged as debris scattered across several blocks.
