As though this nightmare had been unfolding quietly inside her house while she was thousands of miles away believing distance could protect her from the past.
“What is she doing here?” Clara asked.
Her husband, Michael, carefully rose from the bed. Every movement seemed cautious now, as though the room were filled with explosives.
“She got sick,” he said softly.
Clara laughed once.
The sound startled even her.
“Sick?” she repeated. “There are hospitals for that.”
“She refused to go.”
